Fries
- 26 ounces frozen French fries
Cheese Sauce
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper
- 2 teaspoons ranch seasoning powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder, divided
- 8 ounces white cheddar cheese, shredded
- Preheat Oven or Air Fryer: Set your oven or air fryer to 400°F to prepare for cooking the fries.
- Cook the Fries: Spread the frozen French fries evenly in a single layer on a baking sheet or in the air fryer basket. Bake or air fry according to the package instructions until they are golden brown and crispy.
- Make the Roux: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Whisk in the flour to combine and cook this mixture for about 2 minutes to form a roux, which will thicken the sauce.
- Add Milk and Seasonings: Slowly pour in the milk while whisking continuously to avoid lumps. Stir in the salt, ground white pepper, ranch seasoning powder, and half of the cayenne powder.
- Thicken the Sauce: Reduce the heat to medium-low and continue cooking the sauce, stirring often, until it thickens, which should take about 5 minutes.
- Incorporate Cheese: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the shredded white cheddar cheese until melted and the sauce becomes creamy and smooth.
- Assemble and Serve: Pour the warm cheese sauce generously over the cooked fries. Optionally, sprinkle the remaining cayenne powder on top for extra heat. Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- You can adjust the cayenne powder to make the cheese sauce milder or spicier.
- For crispier fries, spread them in a single layer and avoid overcrowding the baking sheet or air fryer basket.
- If you prefer, substitute whole milk with 2% milk for a lighter sauce.
- Leftover cheese sauce can be refrigerated and gently reheated; add a splash of milk to loosen if it thickens too much.
