Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 1 pound lean ground beef (or ground turkey/chicken)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon plant-based Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1/3 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the Gravy

  • 1 medium onion (sliced)
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms (sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1¾ cups beef broth

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until well blended, then shape the mixture into four oval patties.
  2. Sear the Patties: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, sear the patties for 5-6 minutes on each side until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté Onions and Mushrooms: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cremini mushrooms. Sauté for 7-9 minutes or until they are caramelized and tender, stirring occasionally.
  4. Make the Gravy Base: Lower the heat to medium, add butter to the skillet, and let it melt completely. Whisk in the flour continuously for 1-2 minutes until the mixture turns golden, forming a roux.
  5. Add Beef Broth: Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens.
  6. Combine and Simmer: Return the cooked patties to the skillet along with the sautéed onions and mushrooms. Simmer together for an additional 5-7 minutes to let the flavors meld and the patties absorb some gravy.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey or chicken for beef.
  • Plant-based Worcestershire sauce can be replaced with regular Worcestershire sauce if preferred.
  • Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles for a complete meal.
  • Make sure the patties are not overmixed to keep them tender.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
