For the Patties
- 1 pound lean ground beef (or ground turkey/chicken)
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon plant-based Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 3 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1/3 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
- Salt and pepper to taste
For the Gravy
- 1 medium onion (sliced)
- 8 ounces cremini mushrooms (sliced)
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons flour
- 1¾ cups beef broth
- Prepare the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, egg, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until well blended, then shape the mixture into four oval patties.
- Sear the Patties: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, sear the patties for 5-6 minutes on each side until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
- Sauté Onions and Mushrooms: In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and cremini mushrooms. Sauté for 7-9 minutes or until they are caramelized and tender, stirring occasionally.
- Make the Gravy Base: Lower the heat to medium, add butter to the skillet, and let it melt completely. Whisk in the flour continuously for 1-2 minutes until the mixture turns golden, forming a roux.
- Add Beef Broth: Gradually pour in the beef broth while whisking to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens.
- Combine and Simmer: Return the cooked patties to the skillet along with the sautéed onions and mushrooms. Simmer together for an additional 5-7 minutes to let the flavors meld and the patties absorb some gravy.
Notes
- For a lighter version, substitute ground turkey or chicken for beef.
- Plant-based Worcestershire sauce can be replaced with regular Worcestershire sauce if preferred.
- Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles for a complete meal.
- Make sure the patties are not overmixed to keep them tender.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
