Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup (2 oz) grated cheese (cheddar, pepper jack, or gruyere)
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh herbs (thyme or rosemary)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Toast the Bread: Lightly toast the bread slices or broil them for 1 to 2 minutes on each side to achieve a slight crispness.
  2. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). For toaster ovens, set the rack to the bottom position and choose the “BAKE” setting.
  3. Prepare Egg Mixture: Crack the egg into a small bowl and beat thoroughly with a fork until the yolk and white are fully combined.
  4. Add Cheese and Herbs: Mix the grated cheese and chopped fresh herbs into the beaten egg. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Spread Mixture on Bread: Evenly spread the egg and cheese mixture over the toasted bread slices, covering all the way to the crusts. Sprinkle cayenne pepper if desired for a hint of spice.
  6. Bake Until Puff & Browned: Place the prepared bread slices on a baking sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the egg and cheese mixture puffs up, becomes bubbly, and starts to brown.
  7. Air Fryer Alternative: Preheat the air fryer to 340°F (171°C). Spread the egg and cheese mixture on untoasted bread slices and place them carefully in the air fryer basket. Air fry for 8 to 10 minutes until golden and cooked through.

Notes

  • Use your favorite cheese such as cheddar, pepper jack, or gruyere for different flavor profiles.
